Audience Research

Questionnaire

What this questionnaire showed that had a large impact on my research was that most people I gave the questionnaire to were female and liked paranormal sub-genre's of horror, which is good considering the antagonists of my horror trailer are vampires who are part of paranormal horror. The questionnaire also revealed to me that although they were known vampires are not considered one of the biggest horror antagonists, this is bad since I'm making a horror film about vampires. However, on the other hand it also means that because vampires are not as widely used in modern day horror films then my film will stand out a lot more with its individuality in contrast to slasher films such as the SAW movies which are very predictable and too widely used making them less original.

Pearl and Dean was a key tool in the next part of my research as it helped me to figure out what type of target audience my film would likely be aimed at. The research I did using Pearl and Dean to find previous vampire horror films, Fright Night and Let Me In, revealed that the majority of vampire movie goers were in fact women aged from 15-24, this is likely due to vampires being considered a monster for the younger generation thanks to other media such as the Twilight books. As well as that some of the main characters in both Fright Night and Let Me In are women who instead of being given the stereotype of being helpless and frail are actually very strong and dominant in their roles in each film.

After I did some research on vampire film within the last few years using IMDb, it became quite obvious to me what the rating of my film would be as all vampire movies released within the last several years have had a 15 rating given to them by the BBFC.

This rating is likely due to amounts of violence and gore as well as use of offencive language in these films, however, there isn't so much as to make the film an 18 rating. Giving my film this rating would help greatly as my target audience is from the age's of 15-24 making it accessible to them.

As a result of all this research I have decided to create my film using a fair amount of blood and violence while at the same time not going overboard with it. Also since my target audience are women aged from 15-24 I will have a cast predominantly women in particular I plan to make the protagonist a woman and give her a position of leadership and authority by making her a Detective Inspector, this will attract my target audience as they will like the idea if a female character being in charge and as the lead role.
